Chapter Fourteen

Another day, another trial assistant. Hopefully, I won’t be adding this one to the list of failures. I’ve renewed my ad in the classifieds but have yet to hear from a single applicant. Mrs. Buckles is my only option. I truly hope today proves to be better than the last two occurrences.

It’s been over a month since I opened the doors to my practice. Having to do my work plus the work of an assistant, is taking its toll. I’ve been staying a few extra hours every evening just to get the filing done. It’s seriously cutting into my Hannah stalking time.

Following the pattern I have established with the previous applicants, I have the instructions typed out and placed on her desk. Today, I brewed coffee, trying to be hopeful. I’m scheduled to be in court most of the morning and away from the office, which unnerves me even more.

Even so, I have no choice today, so I’ve typed out an itinerary for the week. This way, if someone calls for an appointment, she will know when to schedule them. I hope I’ve covered all the bases. If she can just finish the filing, I’ll be a happy camper. I’m trying to find a silver lining in this fiasco I’ve dubbed “The Secretary Hunt from Hades”.

“Yahoo! Anyone here?” a cheery voice calls out.

Great, I meant to be in the reception area when she arrived.

Leaving the office kitchen, I’m greeted by a very plain-looking woman in her mid to late thirties. She has short brown hair, large glasses, an oversized bag in her hand, and is wearing a brown pantsuit—very nondescript. I hurriedly greet her because if I don’t get a move on, I’ll be late for court.

“Lee Burkett. I’ve left your instructions on the desk. I apologize for not being able to stay in the office this morning, but I have to be in court shortly. The kitchen is down that hallway, and my office is through there. If you need anything, I’ve left my number so you can text me. I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m available.”

Taking my hand in a firm grip, she nods her understanding. “I’m Janice Jones. I’m sure everything will be fine. Go to court, and I’ll get settled in.”

Smiling, I return her handshake. She seems normal—even her name is plain. She reaches into her bag and pulls out a pink, cat-shaped mug and places it on the corner of the desk.

Shaking my head, I grab my briefcase and even whistle a tune as I leave the office. Today is going to be a good day, I just know it.

Today turned into hell! Cat lady hell that is.

What the ever-loving fuck has this woman done to my reception area? Looking around, all I see are cats everywhere. There’s even one curled up in a bed in the corner. Pictures of cats hang on every wall. Standing in the center of the room, I turn in amazement and wonder how she got all this done in such a short period.
